COVID-19: CORPS MEMBERS THAT ARE MAKING A DIFFERENCE

With the spread of the pandemic in the country, certain individuals, financial institutions, NGOs, private and public bodies have shown that everyone needs a little kindness by giving out money to the public, supplying palliatives, contributed to the building of isolation centers and other means of sustenance to help spread hope and keep the country together. One beautiful thing about people making a difference this trying time is that corps members are not left out as they have also proved to be an integral part of the economy by giving back to the country in their respective states
A department in the NYSC scheme which is called Skill Acquisition & Entrepreneurship Department (SAED) made a lot of impact by allowing corps members with the knowledge of some certain skills to help the nation. Some corps members gave their allowance back while others provided supplies for their states. See full details below

WAR VETERANS BENEFIT FROM CORPS MEMBER’S PHILANTHROPY
Corps Member Unogwu Comfort FC/19B/9657, has donated different categories of foodstuffs comprising rice, tubers of yam, beverages and clothes to the inmates of Green Hero Foundation, Abuja. The donation was made to empower the old veterans prior to the lock down directive of the Federal Government to curtail the spread of the dreaded COVID-19.
CORPS MEMBERS PRODUCE HAND SANITIZER
Corps Members in Oyo State have started mass production of hand sanitizer through the Skill Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) of the NYSC. The sanitizers which would be distributed to hospitals and different communities within the State will prevent the spread of COVID-19 pandemic.
CORPS MEMBERS TO CONTAIN THE SPREAD OF COVID 19
Corps Medical Personnel serving at General Hospital, Oraifite, in Ekwusigo Local Government Area of Anambra State fully briefed; and on standby to be deployed for the containment of the spread of COVID-19 in the State as part of their National Service.
The personnel are fully observing the safety- first admonition of the Director-General.
CORPS MEMBERS PRODUCE FACE MASK IN NASARAWA
Production of face masks by trained (SAED) Corps Fashion Designers in Nasarawa State with the intention of donating them to Nasarawa State Government as NYSC’s contribution to the fight against Corona Virus.
OGUN CORPS MEMBER PRODUCES, DONATES HAND WASHING LIQUID SOAPS TO STATE GOVERNMENT’S COVID-19 PROGRAMME
A member of the National Youth Service Corps in Ogun State, Adefisoye Adeshola Joseph with Code Number OG/19B/7322, has personally produced and donated 100 pieces of hand washing liquid soaps to the State Government’s COVID-19 programme.
NYSC PRODUCES SANITIZERS, SOAPS, SENSITISES KWARA COMMUNITIES
The National Youth Service Corps Kwara State Secretariat has produced hand sanitizers and antiseptic liquid soaps as part of its efforts towards curtailing the spread of Corona virus in the State. Corps Members in the State also embarked on sensitization and distribution of the items led by the State Coordinator.

SENSITISATION BY NYSC CORPS MEMBERS
Patriotic Corps Members educating the nation and sensitizing it’s public on the dangers of COVID-19. A group of Corps Members in Bauchi State embarked on awareness campaign on Corona Virus in Wunti market and Yelwan Lebura Community of Bauchi town. The awareness involved sensitization on how to prevent COVID-19 in both English and Hausa Languages, distribution of hand sanitizers and buckets with taps to provide running water and also demonstration of proper hand washing technique.
LAGOS ENGAGE CORPS MEMBERS IN PALLIATIVE SUPPORT DISTRIBUTION
In a bid to ease the effective distribution of stimulus package to residents of the State, the Lagos State Government in collaboration with the National Youth Service Corps, Lagos State Secretariat has engaged Corps Members to participate in the distribution of the items across all the Local Government Areas of the State.

COMMENDATIONS
The Federal Government also commended the National Youth Service Corps for contributing to the on-going efforts at containing the spread of COVID-19 through the production of face masks, antiseptic liquid soap and hand sanitizer for public usage.
The Alake of Egbaland, HRM Oba Adedotun Aremu Gbadebo has commended the National Youth Service Corps for its efforts in supporting the government in the fight against COVID-19 pandemic in Nigeria.
The Shehu of Borno, Alhaji, Dr. Abubakar Ibn Umar Garbai Elkanemi, CFR, showered encomiums on the Management of NYSC in the State when the State Coordinator, Malam Nura Umar, Staff and Corps Member presented some anti COVID -19 items made by the Corps Members to him in his palace.
The paramount leader of Doma kingdom in Nasarawa State, the Andoma of Doma, Alhaji (Dr) Ahmadu Aliyu Oga Onawo has expressed satisfaction with the National Youth Service Corps in its fight against COVID-19.
The Governor of Ogun State, Prince Dapo Abiodun has once again commended the National Youth Service Corps, Ogun State Secretariat for the efforts it has been making towards the fight against the deadly COVID-19 pandemic, especially in areas of public sensitization, donation of liquid soaps, face masks and sanitizers to the State Government.
Taraba State Governor, Arch. Darius Dickson Ishaku has commended the efforts of Corps Members in the State in mitigating the spread of the novel COVID-19 disease in the state.
The fight against Corona is still on and everyone is expected to take responsibility. Keep washing those hands, wear the protective face mask, stay home if you don’t have to go out and maintain social distancing when you do. AbexWorld says this too will pass.

Corp Members to Await Directives From NYSC Management Concerning Activities

My Dear Corps Member

Further to the recent scourge of COVID-19 within Lagos and Nigeria at large, I have deemed it absolutely necessary to communicate with you on a number of issues owing to the respective potential roles you will undertake in this Coronavirus Crisis.

Make no mistake by leaving your safe respective residents to risk your health and well-being by going to your PPA, this troubled moment is not the appropriate time for that, the safety and well-being of every corps member remains my utmost priority, .

In view of this, I am therefore instructing all Lagos State Corps Members to stay at home, and will ensure all PPA restrict any NYSC Corp Members from coming to work.

Attention
NYSC officials will be inspecting all companies registered as PPA
Any Corp Member found guilty of flouting this directive will be sanctioned with four (4) months Extension, affected corp member will face the disciplinary committee which may result to termination of his/her service

Adhere strictly to this to avoid being penalized

Difference between a university and Polytechnic

Side Talk: Difference Between Polytechnic and University

We are not doing this to demoralize nor to discourage any aspirants, but only to tell what is obtainable in our society.
Before you read this write up, may I quickly tell you that success has nothing to do with polytechnic or university. Some people are dropped out yet they succeed.

Mr President (Buhari) is an O level holder but number one citizen of Nigeria. Bill Gate dropped out from university yet a world billionaire.
This write up is only for informative purpose and I decided to make it exclusive and comprehensive for proper comprehension and for any derogation.

Note: We are not among those agitating for superiority of institution.

Difference between a university and Polytechnic

The difference between Polytechnic and University are;

1. Organogram

The distinction of university and polytechnic starts from Nigerian educational organogram. Our organogram is as follow;

Nursery
Primary (lower basic)
Secondary (upper basic)
Secondary (senior class)
College of Education
Polytechnic
University.

The above organogram has already made polytechnic inferior to university. It is this organogram that makes university highest learning institution.
Postgraduate programs (except diploma) are only run in university which means even a rector, despite being head of leadership in polytechnic will need to go to university (highest learning institution) if he/she needs to do any postgraduate program.
That is a slap on the face of polytechnic and makes it not only subordinate to university but inferior. It means after HND, if anyone needs to further then you must go to university.
It is the only institution that has the last stage of academic and professional degree.

2. Requirements

Another area of difference is the prerequisite of the two institutions. Before the amalgamation of the PCE and UME, the two examinations showed clearly the level of the two institutions.
The PCE comprises three subjects, while UME comprises four subjects. This has already put university at the edge of polytechnic.

The number of credit to gain admission to university were five credit passes in five subjects while polytechnic were four credit possess as at that time.
After the amalgamation of the two examinations, the cut off for polytechnic is lower compare to university even as declared by JAMB director.
All these are establishing superiority and put in mind of employers that one is greater than the other.

3. Competency

Even though this is not realistic in all cases, competency can never over stressed. It is an assumption that has become practice in Nigeria labour market.
It is believed that university students are usually brilliant compare to polytechnic students. The reason for this assumption is not however far fetched. Why? Before anybody can be a full lecturer in university, he/she must have master degree.
An HND holder plus PGD could be lecturer in polytechnic. This to Nigeria employers shows the strength of the two graduates.
A university has many doctorate degree holders but we can count the number of doctorate degree holders in any polytechnic.
Immediately a lecturer in polytechnic acquires doctorate degree, he/she departs the system and starts lobbying to become university lecturer.
Also, hardly you can find professor in polytechnic. A professor in polytechnic will likely be in private which means he/she owns the institution.
Ordinary doctorate degree, lecturer will discard polytechnic and get employment in university to attain the level of professor.
Since university has more doctorate degree holders and professors but polytechnic has less or not at all, hence the assumption that he who taught by PhD holders and many professors cannot be compare by student who only taught by Masters degree holder.
Most of these Masters degree holders are also student of Ph.D lecturers. This is not our assumptions but generality of our society. We are not saying they are right, I am only pasting their postulations.

4. Professional and Academic

To further the difference is professionalism and academic nature. The best language to carry many people along is practical and theoretical nature. Polytechnic is considered an institution for professional studies while university is considered an institution for academic study.

The system of polytechnic is believed to be professional (practical) in nature while university learning is base on thesis (theory).
In other word; in company like Unilever, a polytechnic graduate in electrical engineering will be employed as technician to work on machine while university graduate will be employed as someone to formulate the theory; manager.
It is general belief that the polytechnic graduates will be good at work while university graduate will be good at research.
A university graduate will design and polytechnic graduate will carry on the design.
This happens in all manufacturing companies. I have had practical experiences in the following companies;

Unilever Nig Plc
Nestle Nig Plc
Cadbury Nig Plc
Yale Food Nig Plc, and
Nigeria Bolting Company 7up.

5. Opportunities

Some job vacancies exclude in entirety HND holders. I can give some links of some websites related to job recruitment where only degree are giving opportunity to apply.
DSS recruitment of 2017 allowed only degree holder to apply but no place for HND holder. The NNPC recruitment of 2019 gave room to only degree holder but scraped HND holder in its recruitment.
The 2020 immigration recruitment gives degree opportunity to apply for superintendent cadre while HND inspectorate cadre (senior inspector).
Though both on level 8, same salary but inspectorate and superintendent cadre are not really equal in activities in that organization.

6. Promotion

HND holders cannot go beyond level 14 in any government parastatal without further his education while degree counterpart can get to last level on the ladder without any additional qualifications

7. Lecturer Ambition

Anyone aspiring to become lecturer has less chance to actualize his/her dream if attended polytechnic. Polytechnic certificate is consider professional but less academic.
Therefore, a graduate from polytechnic is believed to lack more thesis experience that can make him/her fit for lecturing job especially in university.
This is not our assumption but what is obtainable out there. I am not commending it in anyway, I am just stating it for informative purpose.

There are lecturers who are graduates of polytechnic, yes but be truthful to your sincerity what is their percentage to the degree counterpart? Some even go get their degree after PGD and master to do Ph.D

8. Type of Masters

We have two types of Masters degree. Professional Masters and academic Masters. Some universities in Nigeria will not still allow HND to study academic Masters even after his/her PGD.
Example of this is Lagos State University. An HND holder plus PGD in mass communication cannot study Msc (academic master) in Mass Communication in LASU.
Instead, he/she will be subjected to study MCS Masters of communication studies, a professional master while Masters of Mass Communication is an academic master.
NOTE: Nigeria government for decade had tried to bridge the gab but it is a bit cumbersome to get it done.
Despite the several announcements of equation of both certificates, it is more a paper work than practical as it doesn’t practice in anyway absoluteness.
Why HND and Degree is not allow to apply for superintendent cadre in ongoing recruitment if both certificate equal and consider same.
Always remember, we are not faulting or derogating polytechnic. I am just giving information. However, I must say this; Nigeria Customs Requirement last year 2019 allowed both certificates to apply for same position; superintendent cadre.
Let me reiterate this emphatically that; certificate is not success and never criteria to determine it. My humble self talking here had worked under a boss who is an ND and even have we Masters degree holder under him.
I had also interviewed people and prefer ND holder to a Bsc holder. I had worked with a boss studied in one of the best universities abroad yet no nothing in profession he claimed he to be specialized.
No one should feel inferior for going to polytechnic, it is your worth that will prove you at the end. Just develop yourself academically and make sure you can even go beyond ordinary defense of your certificate.

NYSC D.G Approve Passing Out For 19B Corps Members

I write to inform you that the Director-General has approved Thursday, 28th May, 2020 as the date for the Passing-Out of the 2019 Batch ‘B’ (Stream I) Corps Members.
Given the circumstances of the CoVid-19 Pandemic, and the required Protocol for social/physical distancing, State/FCT Coordinators are enjoined to carry out the following:

Release official vehicles to convey the Certification officers with letters of introduction for inter-State or border Crossings, to facilitate the collection of Certificates of National Service at the NDHQ;
Create enabling environment, preferably, open spaces for the distribution of Certificates of National Service to Corps members by creating at least ten (10) service points;
The Distribution of Certificates of National Service be staggered for a period of ten (10) days, at the first instance, in compliance with the approved protocol of social distancing, and continued thereafter depending on the number of the remaining Certificates;
Each distribution point in the State should not have more than thirty (30) Corps Members, with a minimum of three (3) NYSC officials supervising the process;
State Coordinators should engage officers on SGL 12 and above to monitor the distribution of certificates. Such officers are to ensure that social distancing is strictly adhered to at the various Local Government Areas
Provision has been made in the Passing-Out budget for the logistics of the officers that will monitor the exercise in all the Local Government Areas;

State Coordinators are requested to establish contact with Security Agencies at the Local Government level for the observance of the required protocol in order to ensure a hitch-free exercise, taking cognizance of the Prevailing circumstances;

BREAKING:PRESIDENT BUHARI EASES LOCKDOWN IN LAGOS,ABUJA,OGUN

The lockdown imposed on Lagos, Ogun and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) to curb the coronavirus spread will be relaxed from Monday, May 4th.
President Muhammadu Buhari in a televised broadcast on Monday says the decision to ease the lockdown was taken in line with the recommendations of the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19, the various Federal Government committees on socio-economic matters and the Nigeria Governors Forum.
Buhari, however, said relaxing the lockdown will be followed strictly with aggressive testing and contact tracing measures while allowing the resumption of “some economic and business activities in certain sectors.”
Speaking, the President revealed that relaxing the lockdown means “selected businesses and offices can open from 9 am to 6 pm” but an overnight “curfew will be imposed from 8 pm to 6 am” and “all non-essential movements will be prohibited during this period essential services.”
Explaining further on what ‘gradually’ relaxing the lockdown will look like, Buhari said residents will be allowed to move goods and services from producers to consumers within the same state but non-essential inter-state passenger travel still remains suspended.
Nigerians will also be mandated to wear face masks or coverings in public “in addition to maintaining physical distancing and personal hygiene.” Also, there shall be no social and religious gatherings
The President finally stressed that the current lockdown will “remain in place until these new ones come into effect on Monday, 4th May 2020 at 9 am.”
Meanwhile, Buhari says he has directed the enforcement of a total lockdown in Kano for a period of two weeks effective immediately adding that “the Federal Government shall deploy all the necessary human, material and technical resources to support the State in controlling and containing the pandemic and preventing the risk of further spread to neighbouring States.
Finally, the President also saluted health workers and other essential staff on the frontline of the country’s response to the Coronavirus Pandemic.
Recall that President Buhari had put Lagos, Ogun and the FCT on lockdown since March 30.

Five Corps Members quarantined in Delta after patient tested positive for coronavirus

Five serving NYSC members, three medical doctors, a pharmacist, medical laboratory scientist and a female nurse have all been quarantined after they had contact with a woman who tested positive for coronavirus in Otu-Jeremi, the headquarters of Ughelli South council area of Delta State.

It all started last week Thursday when the boyfriend of the woman who is said to be 36-years old visited Otu-Jeremi General Hospital and was diagnosed of tuberculosis, even though she later showed symptoms of coronavirus.

She was then referred to the isolation centre in Warri, where her sample was collected on Monday and came back positive on Tuesday.

A source who preferred to be anonymous said: “The patient and her boyfriend came to the hospital last Thursday and upon medical test, she was diagnosed of tuberculosis and showed symptoms of COVID-19.

“Owing to the fact that the Ughelli COVID-19 holding centre was not ready as at Thursday, the patient was asked to immediately go to the Warri center for treatment.

“Unfortunately, she went to the Warri centre on Sunday, three days after, where her sample was collected and taken to Irua Specialist hospital for test the next day, which was Monday.

“The result came out Tuesday and she was diagnosed to be positive for COVID-19. The NCDC team has already begun contact tracing at the residence of her boyfriend in Otor-Udu and her residence in an estate in Effurun, Uvwie local government area.”

NYSC DIDN’T SUSPEND ALLOWANCE FOR THE MONTHS OF APRIL AND MAY FOR ALL CORPS MEMBERS

The attention of Management of the National Youth Service Corps has been drawn to a fake news release, directed at Corps Members, and purported to have been issued by the Director – General, conveying to them that their monthly stipends for April and May would be contributed to the fight against COVID –19.
It will be recalled that a similar mischievous story had earlier been bandied on the social media in February, 2020.
Management wishes to advise all Corps Members to disregard the poorly written story in its entirety, as there is no iota of truth in it. The story emanated from a fake source.
It is important to note that payment of monthly stipend for the month of April shall be effected without the usual gathering for Clearance, in keeping with the rule of social distancing.
It is equally imperative to add that there shall not be Clearance for the month of May, 2020. The system shall generate automatic clearance for everyone.
Management appreciates the contributions of Corps Members across the country in the fight against the pandemic.
Special commendation once again goes to Corps Medical Personnel working tirelessly with medical teams across the country to save lives; and Corps Engineers that fabricated pedal – operated machine dispensing sanitiser, water and soap.
The various Skill Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development groups, working day and night to produce face masks, sanitisers and liquid soap, donated to the Federal and State Governments, in addition to communities, in order to contain the spread of the virus are not left out of the commendation.
Management remains very proud of you. In the same vein, you are urged to sustain and deepen this fervour for national development, even after we have won the battle against COVID — 19.
Rest assured, the welfare of Corps Members shall continue to be given top priority by Management at all times.

How to Apply for CBN COVID-19 Loan: Available for Households and MSMEs in Nigeria

As part of the measure to reduce the impact of COVID-19 pandemic on businesses in Nigeria, the Federal Government of Nigeria through the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) have introduced COVID-19 support loans for Households and Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs).
The coronavirus pandemic has led to unprecedented disruptions to global supply chains, sharp drop in global crude oil prices, turmoil in global stock and financial markets, massive cancellation of sporting and entertainment event, the lockdown of large swaths movements of persons in many countries, and intercontinental travel bans/restrictions across critical air routes across the world.
These outcomes have had severe consequences on households’ livelihoods and business activities, resulting from drop in global demand, declined consumer confidence and slowdown in production.
In this respect, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) introduced the N50 billion Targeted Credit Facility (TCF) as a stimulus package to support households and micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.
This guideline outlines the operational modalities for the Scheme.
Who Is Eligible for CBN Loan for Covid19?

Households with verifiable evidence of livelihood adversely impacted by COVID-19; and
Existing enterprises (MSMEs) with verifiable evidence of business activities
adversely affected as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Enterprises with bankable plans to take advantage of opportunities
arising from the COVID-19 pandemic.

Activities Covered
Eligible activities under the Scheme include:

Agricultural value chain activities
Hospitality (accommodation and food services)
Health (pharmaceuticals and medical supplies)
Airline service providers
Manufacturing/value addition
Trading
Any other income generating activities as may be prescribed by the CBN.

Funding
The Scheme shall be financed from the Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises Development Fund (MSMEDF).
Participating Financial Institution
The eligible participating financial institution for the Scheme is NIRSAL Microfinance Bank (NMFB).

Loan Limit
SMEs: The loan amount shall be determined based on the activity, cashflow and industry/segment size of beneficiary, subject to a maximum of N25 million for SMEs; and
Households: Can access a maximum of N3 million
Working capital shall be a maximum of 25% of the average of the previous 3 years’ annual turnover. (where the enterprise is not up to 3 years in operation, 25% of the previous year’s turnover will suffice).

Interest Rate
Interest rate under the intervention shall be 5% p.a. (all inclusive) up to 28th February 2021 and thereafter, the interest on the facility shall revert to 9% p.a. (all inclusive) as from 1st March 2021.
Collateral Requirement
The collateral to be pledged by beneficiaries under the programme shall be as
may be acceptable by NIRSAL MFB, but may include any one or more of the
following:
i. Moveable asset(s) duly registered on the National Collateral Registry (NCR).
ii. Simple deposit of title documents, in perfectible state
iii. Deed of Debenture (for stocks), in perfectible state
iv. Irrevocable domiciliation of proceeds
v. Two (2) acceptable Guarantor
vi. Personal Guarantee of the promoter of the business
vii. Life Insurance of the Key-Man, with NMFB noted as the First Loss Payee
viii. Comprehensive Insurance over the asset
Principal Repayment
Repayment shall be made on installment basis by the beneficiaries to the NMFB according to the nature of enterprise and the repayment schedule/work plan provided at the application stage.

CBN To Offer Loans To NYSC Members

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has promised to offer loans to the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members for a 7-year tenure. The loan is intended for the purpose of establishment of small and medium scale enterprises.
This was disclosed by the Central Bank Governor, Godwin Emefiele, in his office while receiving the Director-General of the NYSC, Brig. Shuaibu Ibrahim, in Abuja.

The Aim Of The Scheme

Emefiele noted that the loan disbursement was developed out of the need to curb the rate of unemployment in the country. He advised that corps members should attend the bank’s entrepreneurship training centres for skills acquisitions in various vocational areas for economic survival after passing out from the service scheme.
The CBN Governor added that the loans would be disbursed to the corps members to provide the needed support to the rent of business offices or workshop and also to acquiring working tools.
“The Central Bank of Nigeria has expressed willingness to provide further opportunities of self-employment for corps members through its skill acquisition training. The CBN governor explained that upon completion of training, beneficiaries would get the cumulative value which represents a loan that would be repaid within seven years with a two-year moratorium.”
The Central Bank Governor further hinted that an entrepreneurship program “Youth Entrepreneurship Development Program (YEDP)” was launched by the bank in 2016, and has served as a propelling platform to the empowerment of youth corps members and other youths across the country for the purpose of wealth creation and self-employment.
Emefiele promised that the CBN National Microfinance Bank will support any corps member who is interested in financing their business.
In his response, Brig. Shuaibu Ibrahim of the NYSC said the visit was intended to enhance more robust collaborations with the Central Bank in the area of empowering youth corps entrepreneurs while requesting for the apex bank’s support in providing more skills acquisitions centres across all zones and modern equipment for the NYSC farms located in various parts of the country.
Entrepreneurship is the driving force of any developing economy. This is why this collaborative effort between the CBN and NYSC is a positive step towards capacity development. It will help to curb the high rate of unemployment in the country.
